Ray Anderson on Sustainability

March 9, 2010 - 2:47 pm No Comments

As the world faces ever-increasing environmental challenges so the demand for smart solutions is growing – and more and more pressure is being placed on business to help provide an answer.

Come and hear how one man’s commitment to finding that answer transformed a billion dollar company and how his approach to sustainability is tangible proof that profit and principles really can sit side by side.

Ray Anderson, the Chairman and Founder of Interface Inc, the word’s largest modular carpet company. Long before many companies took up the environmental cause, Ray identified the importance of sustainability, not just in terms of the way we live but also the way we work. The result for his business? Reduced costs, increased innovation, inspired employees and incredible amounts of goodwill.

Ray was a key adviser to the Clinton administration on environmental policy and was one of TIME Magazine’s 2007 “Heroes of the Environment.” He also appeared in the 2003 documentary The Corporation alongside Michael Moore and in Leonardo DiCaprio’s environmental film The 11th Hour.

Within Reach – Emerald Earth Sustainable Community Tour

December 21, 2009 - 6:32 pm 13 Comments

A short film.

My plan to make this a feature length documentary will involve a sustainable transportation journey and will take approximately a year. It will include visiting many intentional communities in the United States.

Investors are needed for materials and funding and will have visible credit on the sustainable transportation as well as in the film’s credits. Interested investors please contact Ryan for information kits at: ryan@consciousphotography.com

This is my story,
“I am a documentarian, photographer, and passionate pursuer of sustainable living. There are many negative things happening in our world that cause social and environmental problems, and much media out there to point out these problems. I have always looked for positive solutions to balance this disharmony i see around me. After having been involved in all types of activism, education, political, and community oriented projects, I have found myself on a path towards living in intentional community on the land. I have met many people along my journey who share this same vision, and see it as a positive solution for change in this world. So why don’t I just go and do this? It is “within reach”…but first, one has to reach within. Once one knows themself, finding the right people, the right environment, and even the right theme to join or start ones own community can be quite a journey. Being that I love documenting and photography, it is my hope to document this journey, create a film, and help to raise awareness of these communities. The first community I have filmed is “Emerald Earth in Northern California”.

Innovate or Die – Aquaduct: Mobile Filtration Vehicle

October 28, 2009 - 11:46 pm 25 Comments

The Aquaduct is pedal powered vehicle that transports, filters, and stores water for the developing world. A peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank draws water from a large tank, through a filter, to a smaller clean tank. The clean tank is removable and closed for contamination-free home storage and use. A clutch engages and disengages the drive belt from the pedal crank, enabling the rider to filter the water while traveling or while stationary.

The Aquaduct is the winning entry in the Innovate or Die contest put on by Google and Specialized. The contest challenge was to build a pedal powered machine that has environmental impact. Please visit our blog ( http://theaquaduct.blogspot.com/ ) or email team.aquaduct@gmail.com for more details.
