Ray Anderson on Sustainability

March 9, 2010 - 2:47 pm No Comments

As the world faces ever-increasing environmental challenges so the demand for smart solutions is growing – and more and more pressure is being placed on business to help provide an answer.

Come and hear how one man’s commitment to finding that answer transformed a billion dollar company and how his approach to sustainability is tangible proof that profit and principles really can sit side by side.

Ray Anderson, the Chairman and Founder of Interface Inc, the word’s largest modular carpet company. Long before many companies took up the environmental cause, Ray identified the importance of sustainability, not just in terms of the way we live but also the way we work. The result for his business? Reduced costs, increased innovation, inspired employees and incredible amounts of goodwill.

Ray was a key adviser to the Clinton administration on environmental policy and was one of TIME Magazine’s 2007 “Heroes of the Environment.” He also appeared in the 2003 documentary The Corporation alongside Michael Moore and in Leonardo DiCaprio’s environmental film The 11th Hour.

Issue in environmental economics and policy?

March 4, 2010 - 6:56 pm 3 Comments

what would be a current issue in environmental economics and policy??

Cap and Trade. Sadly the Marxist take over of the Capitalist Free Market System by the gov’t is based on fraudulent reports. Research the major players in the "environmental" "green" movement and you’ll see a lot of USSR communists like Gorbechov, etc. The tie between Cap & Trade, Kyoto, etc. is very easy to make on an economic theory macro level as well as a micro level for how it changes individuals spending habits due to increase in fuel costs. You can also make the macro argument between countries based on who has to follow the law, who doesn’t and how this changes labor and trade.

What’s the Tory environmental policy? Do the Tories even HAVE an environmental policy!?

March 2, 2010 - 7:51 pm 1 Comment

Haha, well havn’t you seen their new symbol? Obviously now that they are represented by a tree they MUST be green. Haha

According to the website…

Environment
A Conservative Government will make Britain greener by tackling climate change and enhancing our environment.

We believe quality of life and environmental issues must be at the heart of politics – which is why we campaigned for a UK Climate Change Bill and why we are calling for a post-Kyoto international agreement.

And it’s why we have pledged to improve Britain’s environment by working towards zero waste, providing incentives to recycle, improving urban green spaces and reversing the decline in our biodiversity.

We will make the development of renewable and low carbon energy sources a priority, with measures including the introduction of feed-in tariffs to encourage every hospital, school and home in the country to generate their own electricity.

Far from costing money, our green policies will actually strengthen Britain’s economy. Families and businesses are being hit hard by the rising cost of energy, and our plans will drive down demand and make way for a massive expansion of low carbon and renewable resources.

Climate change adaptation must go hand in hand with mitigation, and we are committed to increasing Britain’s ability to cope with extreme weather conditions, for example by improving our flood prevention measures.

Seems a bit vague to me…

EU Environmental Policy and Czech President . . .?

February 28, 2010 - 8:20 pm 1 Comment

Has there been any discussion about the effects of Czech leader assuming the role of President and the EU’s environmental policy . . . and on a separate note . . . could this be why the Bali road map conference agreed to not agree until 2009?

Is this the President that doesn’t believe in the hype over Global Warming, but was still elected in a land-slide? If so, he speaks about the topic more smartly than the Albert Gore Jr. fellow who upgraded his home to be "green" but ended up using more carbon than before… so he bought carbon offsets from himself (his own company).

As you can see, I don’t know the topic this time around…

Nonpoint Source Pollution – Water Quality Standards

Instructor Holly Doremus. This introductory course is designed to explore fundamental legal and policy issues in environmental law. Through examination of environmental common law and key federal environmental statutes, including the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act, and Clean Water Act, it exposes students to the major challenges to environmental law and the principal approaches to meeting those challenges, including litigation, command and control regulation, technology forcing, market incentives, and information disclosure requirements. With the addition of cross-cutting topics such as risk assessment and environmental federalism, it also gives students a grounding in how choices about regulatory standards and levels of regulatory authority are made.

Need help…Economic and political policy of environmental problems….school question?

February 24, 2010 - 6:06 pm 1 Comment

I am doing this question for a geog assignment and am looking for some ideas: what would be an example of economic and political policies for the environmental problems in our country? if you could give me some answers it would help a lot..thanks.

Two important ones are a carbon tax, which directly taxes products that emit carbon dioxide, and a cap-and-trade system, where a maximum level of pollution is set (and lowered over time) and industry is allowed to trade amongst themselves to eliminate pollution at lowest cost.
